The Princess is Dead

I got my Wii last sunday and I’ve been playing Zelda - Twilight Princess a bit throughout the week. At first it was pretty fun, and there were some parts that I really enjoyed, but after about 10 hours it got pretty repetitive and boring.

The Wii controller is interesting. The new pointing system is definitely good - it works well and is nice for things like the slingshot. I was pretty disappointed that the analog stick was still there - the system of movement was in no way revolutionary. It works out pretty nicely in large open fields, like when you’re on a horse. But for moving around on little rocks in lava, it is a total pain, especially when turning and moving are done with the same control.

Also, the whole motion sensing thing is a bit gimmicky. I like it better than a controller, of course, but it’s still not that amazing. Though the controller seems pretty advanced (it’s got tilt and 3 dimensional motion sensing I think), its not too revolutionary. They basically just changed the input from a button combination to a motion signature. So instead of pressing a, you’d move your remote to the right or wiggle the nunchuck. I was looking forward to using it as a real sword with full swing capability, rather than just using it to do two basic moves over and over again. Better than a controller, but still not there yet. Partly the game’s issue, and partly the console’s.

As for Zelda, it’s pretty cool but I guess it’s just not the kind of game for me. Some parts were really fun - I especially liked running around on the big field chasing enemies - but I hate running around a little dungeon, just trying to get the hell through, or jumping on little rocks and falling into lava when the analog stick goes to the left too much.

I like fantasy and adventure games, but MMO’s and RPG’s just aren’t for me. Back in the day, Runescape and Diablo II were fun.. but I think the best games I’ve played were Starcraft and Warcraft III, online of course. Some FPS games are also pretty good - I play UT2004 on my macbook sometimes, just some short capture the flag games. It’ll be interesting to play some FPS on the Wii… The controller should be pretty good for that.

The wiimote is pretty capable, but most software isn’t calibrated, wait till the next gen of wii games. You can see the advanced capability in some games or in the online hacks. No one’s fine tuned the software yet though. But YAY! Anands back to work.
