O u have? cause i just thought of it right now when I was n the bathroom.
like cause theres crappy “artists” or people who consider themselves artists. but theyre not good artists, cause what they do is ugly. i guess technically you can say it has ‘meaning’ but that doesnt make them GOOD. (read: lots of those old paintings that arent really that nice but are worth a lot for some reason, or those “modern” pieces that sell for like a million dollars and its like a dot of paint on a canvas. photographers are artists, good ones are good artists cause their photos look awesome (and the really sweet ones also have meaning)
and then theres designers. some designers just build or design stuff but its not exceptional—especially with like interface stuff. their job is to make it understandable and work and stuff. but some designers are also artists and though the stuf serves a purpose (advertising or interaction, etc. its also beautiful) and those are the good designers.
designers are also scientists. good designers, that is. because beauty is scientific. you can say its subjective, or in the eye of the beholder, or defined by media and social constraints, but in the end its pretty black and white, with a bit of a grey area. but it really is scientific. contrast, composition, grids, alignment, focus, message—all of these are problems that the designer needs to solve, though sometimes (especially if they’re good) only subconsciously.
so a good designer needs to first identify problems—scientifically or subjectively: as in, not just “that looks bad” but “that logo doesnt match the rest of the style” or this color scheme is too bright. scientific problems, requiring a solution, just like a math problem
